Wear Sunscreen

You probably already know how important sunscreen is for trips to the beach or when you’re planning on a lot of time outdoors. However, the sun is sufficiently intense to cause skin damage even during brief exposures so be sure to apply sunscreen every single day.

Sunscreens are rated for their protection against UVA and UVB rays. Depending on your skin tone, choose an appropriately strong sunscreen (usually SPF 30 or greater). Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before heading out to give it a chance to properly cover your skin. If you’re outside for longer periods of time, always re-apply your sunscreen every two hours, more frequently if you’re swimming or perspiring.

Cleanse the Face

Keeping your face extra clean is the best way to keep your skin looking fresh and clear. Incorporate a daily facial cleaning regimen, being sure to use a gel or cleanser that removes unsightly oils and cleans out your pores. Avoid any facial cleansers containing alcohol, dyes, or artificial aromas as these can over-dry your skin.

Use Moisturiser

A lot of guys think that moisturising is only for wintertime. Even on the hottest, most humid days of summer, your skin needs moisturising. Winter formulas and heavy creams can leave your skin feeling greasy so for summer pick a light formula that is quickly absorbed without leaving a shiny sheen on your face.

Don’t Skip the Toner

A quality toner will keep your skin feeling tight and firm all day long. The best time to use a toner is right after you finishing shaving or use you r face wash This will work to close up your pores and stop ingrown hairs from having a chance to form.

Unless your facial skin is excessively oily, try to avoid toners that contain alcohol, as these will remove vital moisture from your face and dry out your skin. If your facial skin gets too dry, your body will compensate by making even more oil, completely defeating the purpose of using a facial toner.

Shampoo + Conditioner

How often you should shampoo depends on how oily your scalp is. If your hair isn’t excessively oily, using shampoo 2-3 times a week is more than enough to keep your hair clean while removing oily build-up. For oilier scalps, you can ramp up your shampoo regimen to once daily but be sure to cut back if you feel your scalp getting tight and itchy. Always follow up with a quality Conditioner to protect the hair afterwards.

Beard and Facial Hair

Long moustaches and beards can play murder on your skin in the heat. Keep your facial hair clean and fresh with a beard shampoo & conditioner combined with a good beard oil.

We recommend Milkman Beard oil and Shampoo & conditioner.

Maintaining Your Tools

It will get more difficult over time if you forget to keep your grooming tools in good nick. For your beard trimmer, be sure to thoroughly wash the snap-on bits in warm soapy water, allowing them to air dry. For the trimmer, use a small brush to get rid of all the tiny bits of hair and then spray or daub a little lubricating oil on the cutting blade. If your trimmer came with its own brush and lubricating oil, use those. If not, most chemists sell special lubricating oil that’s safe for electric razors and beard trimmers.

If your electric shaver is rated safe to be immersed in water, rinse it thoroughly in hot water when you finish shaving. For manual shavers, do the same. Be sure to let it air dry between shaves to avoid letting rust attack the metal bits.
